Some things never change. Sheffield's musical summer is now positively bursting with festivals and events to put a smile on the city's face. Last year saw the return of staples and favourites in Tramlines and Float Along Festival, alongside the addition of a new outdoors festival in Rock n Roll Circus, which has confirmed it's return for this year.
But, no matter how many new events are added to the calendar, one thing is always the same for the Steel City. It isn't summer until Get Together Festival has started. Kelham Island plays host to one of the freshest and most innovative festivals in the whole of the UK, for one day a year.
Saying that though, the festival itself has never been one to rest on it's laurels. It has gone from strength to strength since its inaugral outing in May 2021. It has earned its position as Sheffield's annual festival season opener, and this year's edition might be the best yet.
As announced recently, the 2024 edition will see Irish rising star CMAT headline in a slot deserving of her burgeoning talent. The news follows the release of her critically acclaimed second album Crazymad, For Me. Dubbed "Dublin's answer to Dolly Parton" by NME, the singer-songwriter is pure entertainment while ensuring that every song leaves its indelible impact long after the curtain closes. She smashed her sub-headliner set at last year's festival and has gone from strength to strength again so we can't wait to see her back in Kelham.
CMAT is far from the only standout name to have been announced for Kelham Island's biggest party. Get Together has always been a hub of some of the most talked about new bands on the scene. This year we will also get to see performances from Gruff Rhys, The Bug Club and Porij as sub-headliners. Alonside these talents is a plethora of the most exciting bands and artists on these isles. To pick out a few that we can't wait to see up close and personal, we have Picture Parlour, L'Objectif, Liz Lawrence and Home Counties. But that is nowhere near the full list of exceptional acts coming to Sheffield in May, for the full list, head to Get Together Festival's website or socials!
The fun by no means stops at the music either. As well as being situated in one of the hottest parts of the city in terms of things to do and places to visit, the festival itself will also play host to a pop up shop from record store Spinning Discs, street food offerings from the iconic Peddler and an artist in residence in Conor Rogers who'll be producing a series of miniature artworks whilst there.
As in keeping with Kelham Island's main draw (for me personally anyway), the festival will again be running their famous "Kelham Beer Mile" presented by Purity Brewing and Kelham Island Brewery. The Mile features tap takeovers showcasing the best of Sheffield's much lauded and ever growing independent brewery scene.
With all this announced and even more to come, it's sure to be an unmissable day. Tickets went on sale at 10am today so be sure to be quick to secure your ticket, these ones never do last long! Tickets can be secured via the Festival's website or through See Tickets and we will get together again in May, if you'll pardon the pun.
