Festival season is well and truly underway and that of course means it's the perfect time to find your new musical obsession, and ideally it'd be one of those artists that you can say "oh, I saw those guys back before they were headlining (insert festival here)". One of those bands that you can imagine getting lost in a mosh pit to at a gig maybe? One of those where you just get the feeling that they're about to explode? Well, with those points in mind, allow us to present Sheffield indie four-piece CRUZ.
Specifically, let us tell you about their newest single 'Hold On', an electric shock of a track about trying to keep the spark alive with someone you know is slipping away. The single constitutes the band's second single release of the year following on from the blistering groove of 'Play The Game' in January.
CRUZ have been on Sheff Mag's radar for a couple of year's now and we're so excited to see the band continue to go from strength to strength with every release. For fans of Red Rum Club, Courteeners or Reverend & The Makers, 'Hold On' is full of the best things we've come to expect from this band. It's led by powerhouse vocals from Sam Thatcher, carried by infectious melodies from Tom Cox on lead guitar and Jamie Scholes on bass, and supported by driving drums from Ethan Mockfor.
'Hold On' buries itself within your ears with catchy lyricism and perfectly captures that universally understood experience of debating whether to stay with someone despite all signs pointing to it not working. Ideas of ignoring flaws and red flags in favour of an idea of what could be play out over undeniable melodies and furious drums that all meld together to conjure this feeling of indecision and inner turmoil, hope and anger at ones self and the situation they've found themselves in.
This single maybe their best work to date and shows a band beginning to truly find their feet, having already garnered huge support from festivals like YNot, as well as indie legends like The View. Anticipation of this release has been brimming since their announcement, with the band producing their first ever 7" Vinyl for the record, one that has sold out before the single is released, and that anticipation has proven to be more than well placed.
CRUZ have a packed Summer ahead of them with a set headlining YNot's Allotment Stage, as well as a slot at Rock N Roll Circus to end August. All this before a huge show back in Sheffield at Network on November 8th after previously selling out The Leadmill in September of 2024. Tickets to all CRUZ shows can be found on the band's website. We can't recommend their live shows enough, they are a band that truly make any live setting their own.
Hold On is out now on all streaming platforms and for updates on anything and everything CRUZ related, visit the band's social media pages - @band_cruz.
